HydroVision SeaStar24: HW Technologies brings passive underwater acoustic imaging to Australia
by HW Technologies on 04/09/2026 5:54 AM
Critical maritime infrastructure demands persistent underwater awareness, achieved without emitting a single acoustic signature of its own.
The HydroVision SeaStar24, developed by German acoustic imaging specialist gfai tech and now available in Australia through HW Technologies, is a passive underwater acoustic camera that turns naturally occurring underwater sound into real-time 2D and 3D visualisations.
Unlike active sonar, SeaStar24 emits nothing. Its 24-channel hydrophone array and real-time digital beamforming reconstruct acoustic activity, from diver movement to vessel and machinery signatures, entirely from ambient sound, enabling discreet, low-footprint monitoring of ports, naval assets, offshore platforms and subsea infrastructure.
The system's compact, configurable array can be deployed to suit project-specific requirements, and its processing software gives operators an intuitive, real-time picture of what's happening beneath the surface, supporting faster, better-informed decisions in defence, maritime security, offshore energy and marine research applications.
gfai tech is a Berlin-based specialist in acoustic camera technology, founded in 2006 as a subsidiary of the GFaI — the Society for the Advancement of Applied Computer Science.
Drawing on a research network of more than 150 scientists and engineers, gfai tech produced the world's first acoustic camera and has spent over 20 years developing acoustic sensing systems for defence, maritime security, automotive and environmental monitoring applications.
All systems are 100% developed and manufactured in Germany and certified to ISO 9001, with the flexibility to adapt to specific operational requirements.
As gfai tech's Australian partner, HW Technologies works alongside gfai tech to trial and validate the SeaStar24 in Australian waters, tailoring deployment to local port, defence and research conditions, and giving Australian organisations local support backed by gfai tech's global engineering expertise.
